Record numbers of countries and sets of medals are awaiting in the games. More than 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including Kosovo and South Sudan for the first time, will take in this sporting event. With 306 sets of medals, the games will feature 28 Olympic sports - including rugby and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. These sporting events will take place in many sporting venues in the Chicagoland area like the Chicago Park District, Soldier Field, and McCormick Place, among many others.
The host city of Chicago was announced at the 121st IOC session held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009. The other finalists were Madrid, Spain and Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Chicago will be the eighth Olympics hosted in the United States, after the 1904, 1932, and 1984 Summer Olympics; and the the 1932, 1960, 1980 and 2002 Winter Olympics. It was the third attempt by the city to host the Olympics after failure to acquire a bid in 1952 and 1956.
