The 1956 Brazilian coup d'état attempt (Portuguese: Tentativa de Golpe de Estado de 1956, also called the Intentona Revolucionária de 1956) was a failed attempt of a coup d'état ocurred between March 31 and April 15, 1956 supposed to overthrow the government of Santiago Dantas by members of the Brazilian Armed Forces, supported by the United States government.

The plans for the coup d'état can be traced back to the government of Getúlio Vargas in the political crisis between his government and the opposition lead by Carlos Lacerda. With the suicide of Vargas and the wide victory of his Vice President Santiago Dantas, the conspirors decided to postpone. As the approval ratings and the economic situation were deteriorating, the conspirators started to move in the military.

The failure of the coup led to the mass expulsion of sympathizers of the coup in the Brazilian Armed Forces, also leading to the end of the Positivist influence in the Brazilian Army (which was de facto in effect since late 19th century), and several congressmen were removed from office after demonstrating support for the rebels.
