Introduction

The Point of Divergence of the 1983: Doomsday-Timeline is September 19th, 1983 on which a seemingly unimportant decision to send an ambitious Colonel of the USSR to a training seminar, taking the place of an ill-plagued colleague, has global implications.

This decision leaves to a different outcome of a well-known though often underestimated event that took place on September 26, 1983.

In our timeline, on that day, Colonel Stanislav Petrov was the watch officer on duty at the Serpukhov-15 bunker near Moscow, monitoring for a US missile attack on the Soviet Union.

Suddenly, the computer-based warning systems reported several US nuclear missiles approaching Soviet territory. In our timeline, Colonel Petrov believed the information to be false and did not alert the Kremlin to the data he was receiving. Given Cold War tensions at the time, such information would likely have convinced the Soviets that the US had launched a first strike attempting to "cut off the head" and launched their nuclear weapons, in the belief it was a "counter-strike", not a first-strike.

Consequently, since in our timeline the world now knows about this event, it is now often considered to have been the moment closest to a nuclear war between the USSR and the USA in the Cold War. Colonel Petrov has been honored as one of the few true "world saviors" and several documentaries prove the seriousness of this event.

This Timeline postulates the results after Colonel Petrov being sent to another installation before September 26th, 1983. The officer now on duty on September 26th considers the alert as being accurate and immediately contacts his superiors. Within minutes, the leaders decide to launch the whole Soviet nuclear arsenal. Logically, the Americans react by launching as well. When the first alerted missile is proved to be a false alarm, it is too late. Thousands of nuclear warheads consequently detonate at targets worldwide. As The People's Republic of China was surprisingly attacked by Soviet missiles as well, part of their arsenal is launched too.

The results of this total nuclear exchange are close to the forecasts of almost complete worldwide destruction and "nuclear holocaust" as predicted by many scientists of this time, resulting in as much as two billion people killed initially, possibly another two billion in the subsequent environmental disaster.

The world largely devastated, most of the northern and parts of the southern hemisphere in ruins, the estimated 800 million survivors desperately try to keep together what is left of human society. They are facing challenges that are seemingly impossible.

After an incredibly horrifying first few years after Doomsday, at least a few regions, territories and countries stabilize and master basic problems such as food and medical supply. As time passes and the recovery continues, new - sometimes surprising- alliances are formed and a new, fragile world order emerges. Initial hopes of some survivors for a united mankind or at least warfare and destruction being ended forever quickly prove false. Indeed, the world is lightyears away from any utopian imaginations. Famine, diseases and lack of resources provoke conflicts and wars in large parts of the world thus often devastating all carefully achieved recovery.

But as some surviving and newly founded nations- particularly a unified Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand and a South American Confederation- prove able to master the problems and even intervene internationally, mankind's extinction seems to finally have been avoided.

Now, more than 25 years after "Doomsday" brought mankind to the edge of total extinction, the foundation of the new "League of Nations" on September 26th, 2008- has shown a glimmer of hope for a possibly more peaceful future for mankind...

But nonetheless, new dangers are emerging all around the globe, threatening most of what has been achieved within the last 25 years...

January 10, 2010: Socialist Siberia expelled from League of Nations: File:New League of Nations-The League of Nations voted to expel Socialist Siberia for its occupation of the Khanate of Aralia. Amam Tuleyev has responded by reasserting the USSR's territorial claims and denoncing the Aralians as rebels. When LoG officials condenmed this as "pointless revanchism", Tuleyev responded by pointing out the Cocos Islands controversy and accusing the LoG of hyprocrisy.

January 10, 2010: President Armenta addresses Chumash -Following the recent population boom in the Chumash Republic President Vincent Armenta came out with press statement today at twelve P.M. local time here is what he had to say. "Fellow citizens of Chumash it is with a good head, and a good heart that I must welcome these new refugees with open arms. Now I understand our current housing and homeless problems, my administration and I have come to a final choice that may solve both problems. Starting at three P.M. today I will officially sign the "Expansion of Territory act" this will extend our borders to all of the Channel Islands, as well as what was once San Luis Obispo county. the act will also add more funds to the development of homes, in the hopes that we may look forward to developing betting lives for all citizens. Now my fellow citizens of Chumash it is time to settle in our new friends from the east, now is the time to finally end the rising homeless rate that has consumed most of us. Thank you." After making his speech President Armentas approval ratings set a new record from his previous rating of 72% to 88%, it is now doubt that he will be reelected come this June.

January 9, 2010: refugees from Nevada flock into the Chumash Republic -Today at approximately eleven A.M. local time, the Chumash Republic reported that about twenty thousand refugees entered the Chumash Republic, claiming to be from Nevada. At that time the refugees appeared at a border fence and where detained by the local military police. About a half-hour later the refugees where released from the detention camp there placed John Hawks the refugees supposed leader made a statement claiming they where all that was left of the southern counties of Nevada and the city Las Vegas, he claimed that they picked up radio-waves the nation broadcasted, and followed them to there location. President Vincent Armenta ordered the building of refugee camps on the Eastern side of the country, and promised all immigrants that they where now citizens of Chumash. Due to the country's low housing infrastructure these people may not have a home to go to, after realizing this President Armenta claimed that he would make a formal statement tomorrow on the nations current state of affairs.

January 8, 2010, 4:30PM GMT (10:30AM CT): Superior businessman announces plans to reestablish halls of fame for baseball, American football: IRON MOUNTAIN, Superior - Superior businessman Elliott Gold held a press conference this morning announcing his plans to reestablish the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Professional Football Hall of Fame by 2014. Speaking in the Gold Room at his Gold Industries, Ltd. headquarters, the entrepreneur said he hoped to establish the American football museum sooner than 2014, using his collection of National Football League memorabilia and items from the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame as a base. Gold said he had been in discussions with Virginian Republic authorities to get their permission to send explorers from the Virginian city of Athens north into former Canton, where the original Professional Football Hall of Fame was located. Gold said the plan is to investigate the grounds, see how much is salvageable, then transport it back to Superior. He also said the same plan would apply for exploring the baseball hall of fame in the village of Cooperstown, in former New York state. Gold said he has also spoken with Vermont officials about sending a party from Vermont into the Cooperstown region. Gold said if everything falls into place, Canton would be explored first, followed by Cooperstown. Gold also announced the venture, via telegraph press release, to media outlets in Virginia and Vermont. He is expected to discuss the venture tonight on Superior's full-power AM radio station, which can be heard across the continent.

January 8, 2010, 1:28AM GMT (Jan. 7, 2010, 7:28PM CT): Dinetah, West Texas agree on unclaimed territory of former New Mexico state: File:700px-Navajo flag svg.png File:800px-Flag of Texas.svg.png RAINBOW BRIDGE, Dinetah - Representatives of the Dinetah and West Texas governments announced the two countries' agreement to jointly govern the territory of the former U.S. state of New Mexico as "international territory". "It is appropriate, as neighbors, friends and former Americans, that we, together, govern this land that lies between us," said Dinetah spokesman Bernard MacDonald. "This land of former New Mexico has lain dormant for over 26 years, a killing ground for people Navajo and non-Navajo, devastated by the worst weapon humanity has ever developed. It is the hope, indeed the expectation, of the people of Dinetah and West Texas that one day, soon, this land will teem once again with life, as a living memorial to those who have left this earth, and a testament to the unbeatable, preserving spirit of humanity that has risen, triumphantly, from the brink of extinction." Also, representatives of Utah will stay to observe next week's summit between West Texas President Mike Conaway and Mexican President Marcelo Ebrard. Conaway left Rainbow Bridge early this morning to attend to business in Midland, before returning next Tuesday for the summit.

January 8, 2010, 14:39 GMT:New Britain reorganised into 'Empire' and new flag and coat of arms drawn up by Parliament:; PORT ELIZABETH, New Britain - The British Parliament concluded the Imperial Amendment today. This document reorganizes New Britain into an 'Empire'. This change in fact has little actual effect other than the alteration of all the flags and coats of arms. However it does consolidate the BIP's power in Parliament and in the country as a whole.

January 7, 2010, 11:30PM GMT (5:30PM CT): Conaway Administration refuses to comment on CRUSA accusations as Dinetah-Utah-West Texas trade agreement announced: File:700px-Navajo flag svg.png File:800px-Flag of Texas.svg.png RAINBOW BRIDGE, Dinetah - Dinetah, Utah and West Texas today announced a joint trade agreement that is effective immediately. Media outlets in West Texas, Mexico, Montana and Utah, along with League of Nations radio, reported the agreement will also help form the base of a "joint front" in regards to political and economic relations with "other political entities", said to refer particularly to Mexico, the North American Union, South American nations and Canada. The agreement is said to include "significant" infrastructure investment in Dinetah from Mexican companies. West Texas President Mike Conaway and Dinetah political leaders were said to be deep into negotations regarding some sort of "shared interest" in the territory of former New Mexico not claimed by either country, with an announcement to be made Thursday or Friday. In Midland, West Texas, Administration officials refused to comment on Tuesday's press conference by the local chapter of the Committee to Restore the United States of America, in which it accused Conaway of acting more in the best interest of Mexico than of West Texas. Officials of the West Texas Republican Party - Conaway's political affiliation - also refused to comment on the CRUSA accusations.

January 7, 2010: Citizen's Congress begins in Victoria: VICTORIA, Victoria: Today marked the beginning of the Citizen's Congress in Victoria. Randomly selected representatives from across the Republic of Victoria gathered today to discuss issues important to the people, and present proposals to address those issues. Main issues discussed in the first day were managing expansion and regional culture and autonomy. It is believed these issues will dominate the congress.

January 7, 2010: Peaceful Reunification Promised in France: PORT AMBONNE, Auvergne: Prefect Patrick Stéfanini and Premier Ministre: Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, former president of France stood today in front of the newly created embassy of the République des Terres Française Australes, created, funded and donated by the people of Auvergne. "Nous sommes bien content de retablir notre pays, la belle France." (English translation: "We are happy to reestablish our country, France the beautiful.") M. d'Estaing said, expressing the rising unification sentiments of Auvergnats, and many French. By creating the embassy, Auvergne hopes to win support from the RTF to begin the process of re-establishing France as a unified entity, beginning with the establishment of the 6th Republic following the 6th constitutional convention to take into account the societal and cultural changes since Doomsday.

Auvergne has recently changed its flag from the Provincial flag of Auvergne to the tricolor of France with the Auvergnat shield in the canton. No response has yet been made by RTF leadership in the wider world, but the Ambassador of the RTF in Port Ambonne graciously accepted the keys to the embassy.

January 6, 2010: Aralian soldiers kidnap SSNN (Siberian State News Network) Reporters: KRASNOYARSK, Soviet Siberia - Today,a team of reporters of the SSNN,the official broadcast channel of Soviet Siberia,were kidnapped by Aralian Soldiers carrying RPGs and other weapons.Aman Tuleyev stated that: "These acts are acts of war and the glorious Soviet State will rescue its brothers who were cowardly attacked by these animals." Abdul Rahim claimed that the soldiers who attacked the reporters weren't members of the regular Aralian Army.The Pakistani ambassador to Siberia,Fareed Marwat claimed that "This attack was the response of our muslim brothers from the north to the mad claims of Tuleyev who said yesterday that Aralia is a part of the USSR."

January 6, 2009, 12:39AM GMT (Jan. 5, 6:39PM CT): First day of Dinetah-Utah-West Texas summit overshadowed by CRUSA allegations: File:700px-Navajo flag svg.png File:800px-Flag of Texas.svg.png MIDLAND, West Texas - As President Mike Conaway met his counterparts from Dinetah and Utah on the first of a three-day summit at Rainbow Bridge, leaders of the Midland chapter of the Committee to Restore the United States of America held a press conference accusing Conaway of "selling out" West Texas to Mexico. Taking note of ongoing talks between West Texas and Mexican officials, including the recent announcement of the joint establishment of a port on the Gulf of Mexico, CRUSA Texas Chairman John MacDonald accused Conaway of actions "detrimental" to West Texas. "We fought for years to keep the Mexicans out of our business, to keep Texas free and independent, and to keep open the possibility of the renewal of the United States," said MacDonald, who served three terms as a Republican Senator from Big Spring from 1989 to 2000 before resigning due to health issues. "We don't care if there are 100 million refugees in Mexico. The Americans don't run that country. Mexico would have engulfed us and stripped us of our resources, without hope of what's good for America, North America, even Texas. Conaway is selling us down a river." The Conaway administration had no immediate comment; Congressman Harry Reeder, who ran against Conaway in the 2009 Presidential race, said "MacDonald means well, those CRUSA guys mean well, but they're misguided about a lot of things. I disagree with the President on a number of things, but I know he would not sell us down the river. Everything he's doing I believe is with the best intentions for the greatest good of our country."

January 5, 2009, 11PM GMT (6PM ET): Debate over budget, extending Presidential term top agenda as Vermont Legislature opens: File:Vermont Flag.png MONTPELIER, Vermont - The Vermont Legislature opened its session on Tuesday with two pressing pieces of business on its agenda: lengthening the Presidential term from two to four years, and balancing the national budget. With the office of the President having taken on increased importance in regional and world affairs, Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed with the administration of President Jim Douglas that an increase of the Presidential term to four years is essential. However, the term increase - once considered a lock - is less certain, as party leaders squabble over the budget. Democrats say they stayed quiet on the budget to show support for Douglas while he met leaders of other North American states in 2009. But, in 2010, Democratic leaders want Douglas to work with them on balancing the budget. "President Douglas has developed a well-deserved reputation for diplomacy and negotiations with other nations. He needs to negotiate with his own people so he, and our country, can lead, without being in debt", said Senate President Pro Tempore Peter Shumlin (D-Windham). Other issues on the legislature's agenda include moving the Presidential primary to August; potentially extending legislative terms to four years; and Vermont's relations with neighboring countries in regards to the ongoing Saguenay conflict.

January 5, 2010:Siberian military expedition encounters isolated state in Central Asia: KRASNOYARSK, Soviet Siberia - Today,the Siberian government announced that a military expedition in the former Uzbek SSR has found an isolated state,the Khanate of Aralia,ruled by a man who claims to be a descendant of the rulers of the Pre-Soviet state in Central Asia,the Khanate of Khiva.The Khanate of Aralia controls all the margins of the Aral Sea.The Soviet leader Aman Tuleyev said that Aralia is part of the former Soviet Union so he will occupy that region.The SAF has found resistance from the troops of the Khan of Aralia,Abdul Rahim.

January 4, 2010: Brazilian presidential candidate assassinated: SÃO PAULO, Brazil - The Brazilian presidential candidate José Serra (PSDB) was assassinated by a mentally-ill man who claimed that Serra was going to re-install the military dictatorship. Paulo Costa, the murderer of Serra, threw a hand grenade inside the car that Serra was in. Now that he is dead it is very probable that the candidate Dilma Roussef (PT) is going to win the elections.

December 23, 2009: Lionel Messi named footballer of the year: LUQUE, Paraguay - FIFA, the global governing body of the sport of football, named Lionel Messi of the United American Republic its World Player of the Year for 2009. Messi, currently playing for the Newell's Old Boys club in the UAR First Division, is only the second non-Brazilian to win the award since it was introduced by FIFA in 1993.

December 20, 2009, 6:35am GMT: American football league in ANZC renamed the Oceanic Football League: PAGO PAGO, Samoa, ANZC - In a hastily arranged meeting, the owners of the eight franchises of the American Football League voted unanimously to change the league's name to the Oceanic Football League. The name change, which takes effect immediately, was done to distinguish the league from the Australian rules Australian Football League and the rugby league Australian Rugby League, as well as to tie it more closely to the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand that it is based in. OFL had become the popular choice for the renaming of the league, and it prevailed over other proposals. A name change for the now former American Football League had been resisted by the owners of the Brisbane Cowboys franchise until late this week, when they agreed in principle to the name change.

December 18, 2009: Saguenay conflict over by Christmas?: STOWE, Superior - Republic of Superior president Terrance Newman told reporters today that he proposed peace talks with Canada for next Thursday, and is very hopeful that both sides will agree to end the conflict. However, a response to this message has yet to be recieved from St. John's. Many fear that Canada will refuse to attend the talks as to Saguenay's ongoing occupation of the Gaspe peninsula, where a puppet government has been set up (the Republic of St. Lawrence). Newman also said Richard Stewart, the Vermont ambassador to Superior, told him that Vermont would be willing to host peace talks between the respective parties in the war.

December 16, 2009: Olympia joins Republic of Victoria. Negotiations begin with coastal survivor communities: VICTORIA, Victoria - Today, officials from the remaining Washington State government in Olympia agreed to a proposal by the Republic of Victoria to join the republic after nearly a month of negotiations. "This is a great victory for the people of Olympia, and great milestone in the recovery of the people of Washington." Premier Jacob Birch said in a statement. While the territory the Washington State assembly controls only extends to Olympia and its surrounding suburbs, the surviving state government joining Victoria could make negotiations with other surviving communities smoother. Victorian officials also announced that negotiations have begun with the surviving communities of Aberdeen and other communities around Gray's Habour, Willapa Bay, and up the Columbia river to Longview.

December 12, 2009: Prince George rejects Victoria's proposal of reintegration. Victorian Citizen's Congress begins preparations: VICTORIA, Victoria - Diplomats from the Republic of New Caledonia rejected a proposal by the Victorian government to rejoin Victoria, who considers itself the legitimate successor of British Columbia. In a statement Victoria Premier Jacob Birch said: "I'm truly disappointed in the response from Prince George. This is a major hiccup in the road to unifying British Columbia under a strong, stable government. We will continue to negotiate with the representatives of Prince George and its allied towns to address any concerns and hopefully come to an agreement in the future." New Caledonian First Councillor Dan Rogers responded: "While we are open to establishing a lasting friendship with the great nation of Victoria, our struggles over the past quarter century have forged us into a different people than we once were. We are an independent people with our own culture that we believe would lose the attentions of the Victorian government should we choose to join them."

On a related note, preparations have begun for the arrival of the representatives for the Citizen's Congress in Victoria. The congress is scheduled to begin January 7th, 2010 in order to discuss the concerns of citizens from across the republic and what can be done to address them.

December 12, 2009, 1:00pm GMT:Krasnoyarsk,Siberian officials announce plans fora new military organization charter: Earlier today on the Siberian State News Network (SSNN), Aman Tuleyev announced his plan to further unite the few remaining communist countries by forming a joint military organization."This will prove instrumental in strengthening our position in this new world order", Tuleyev said for reporters at the press conference, "This organization will improve relations between the remaining socialist nations of the world and also be a new cornerstone of our global politics. I am sure that this will pave the way for a future broader organization covering both military and economic issues." Tuleyev plans on visiting proposed member states in early February 2010 to gain support for this new alliance, currently dubbed the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

December 8, 2009, 12:50am GMT: West Texas, Mexico building port on Gulf of Mexico: MEXICA, Mexico - Several media sources in Mexico are reporting that Mexico and West Texas have signed an agreement to build a port in the former Texas city of Port Isabel, just east of South Padre Island. The port is intended to be used by West Texas for trade with other nations, including Mexico. Mexica newspaper La Opinion is reporting in its Tuesday edition that the port is intended to be operational by September 2010 and "fully operational" by New Years Day 2011. La Opinion also is reporting that both countries are aiming for 10,000 people to operate the port and adjacent Port Isabel - many from Mexico and West Texas, some from other Caribbean and North American nations - when it opens in the fall.

December 7, 2009, 9:00am GMT: Berlin to host Europa Games in October 2010: BERLIN, Kingdom of Prussia - Radio Prussia reports that King Christian will make an official proclamation at noon, Berlin time. Government officials have privately stated that he will officially announce that the Prussian capital will host the Europa Games which will take place from October 1-10, 2010.

December 5, 2009, 7:00pm GMT: Report, Berlin to host Europa Games in October 2010: BERLIN, Kingdom of Prussia - The Sunday edition of the Berliner Zeitung will report that the Prussian capital has been selected to host the Europa Games, a regional version of the Olympic games, in October of next year. The official announcement is expected to be made either Monday or Tuesday. The article states that the IOC chose Berlin, which hosted the Summer Olympics in 1936, largly due to recent improvements in Prussian infrastructure. In particular, the newly restored and modernized Olympiastadion, where most of the athletic events will be held. The article also states that King Christian personally lobbied the IOC officials. Some experts raise concerns about the possibility of staging a major sporting event in less than a years notice, but government officials see the games as a showcase of Prussia's rise as a European power. The games are scheduled for October 1 - 10, 2010. Similar events will be held in 2010 in Pais de Oreo, Auckland, ANZC, Buenos Ares, UAE, and Charleston, Republic of Virginia.

December 4, 2009, 8:24pm GMT: Draw for 2010 World Cup complete: DUBLIN, Celtic Alliance - The draw for next year's World Cup football tournament in the Celtic Alliance was held tonight. The 16 qualifying clubs were drawn into four groups, with the champion and runner-up from each group advancing to the knockout stage. Celtic Alliance, as the host nation, drew the first spot in Group A; the Celts will be joined in the group by Mexico, Paraguay and Singapore. The United American Republic, one of four seeded sides, drew the top spot in Group B, and will be joined by the ANZC, Pais del Oro and Greece. Defending World Cup champion Alpine Confederation drew top honors in Group C, and will be joined by the USSR (aka Siberia), Chile and the Kingdom of Cleveland. Brazil, the top-ranked nation according to the current FIFA World Rankings, drew first in Group D and will be joined by the East Caribbean Federation, New Britain and the Sicilian Republic. Celtic Alliance and Mexico will play the opening match on June 11 at Croke Park in Dublin. Group play will go through June 29, with rest days on June 30 and July 1. The quarterfinals are scheduled for July 2-3, the semifinals July 6-7, the third-place match July 10 and the final on July 11 at Croke Park in Dublin.

December 3, 2009, 4:20pm GMT: FIFA approves 34 new member nations at meeting: DUBLIN, Celtic Alliance - FIFA, the global governing body of the sport of football, approved 34 new member nations today during its annual meeting. These nations, many of whom were members of FIFA pre-Doomsday, are: Asturias, Auvergne, Bourgogne-et-Franche Comte, Cabinda, Canada, Castile and Leon, Euskadi, Friesland, Galicia, Iberia, Japan, Kongo, KwaXhosa, La Republique Poitevine, Liberia, Lille-et-Terres Flamande, Monaco, New Caledonia, Orleans, the People's Republic of Angola, Poitevine Republic, Prussia, the Republic of the Cape, Spanish Republic, Superior, Vermont, Virginian Republic, Volkstaat, Waterboersland, West Texas, Wisconsin, Yucatan, Zanzibar and Zululand. FIFA also announced that membership requests from the nations of Assiniboia, Bermuda, Dinetah, Deseret, Grand Andorre, Kentucky, Lakotah, Monrovia, Nepal, the Republic of Rif and Tibet would be "expedited" and voted on "before" next summer's World Cup tournament in Celtic Alliance.

December 2, 2009, 11am GMT: Groupings for World Cup draw announced: DUBLIN, Celtic Alliance - Ahead of Friday's draw in Dublin for the 2010 World Cup football tournament, FIFA announced the groupings for the draw. Seedings for the top four were based on the October 2009 FIFA World Rankings. Host Celtic Alliance gets the fourth seed. Geographical criteria will also be heeded, as to prevent two teams from the same confederation being drawn into the same group. The exception is South America. Celtic Alliance cannot play the European teams, and Brazil and UAR cannot play the remaining South American teams. The pots: 1) Brazil, United American Republic, Alpine Confederation, Celtic Alliance 2) Teams from Asia/Oceania and CONCACAF: ANZC, East Caribbean Federation, Mexico, Siberia. 3) Teams from Africa and South America; Chile, New Britain, Pais del Oro, Paraguay. 4) Teams from Europe, and Asian/South American playoff winner: Cleveland, Greece, Sicily, Singapore.

November 27, 2009, 3pm GMT: West Texas, Dinetah to hold "mini-summit" in January: MIDLAND - West Texas Presidential Deputy Press Secretary Arlene Gonzalez said that President Mike Conaway would hold a "mini-summit" with Dinetah leaders in January, ahead of the Mexico/West Texas summit in the Navajo nation, to define the borders of their respective countries, and to decide what, if anything, should be done with the remainder of former New Mexico.

File:ANZ-flag-HCF-small.png JERVIS BAY - Americans across the Commonwealth gathered in one another's homes on Thursday to give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed over the past year in one of the expat community's most important annual rituals. Quaintly domestic and distinctly American, Thanksgiving is mostly a day of private reunions and meals, not of speeches and large public gatherings. It is a time for Americans - and, of course, their Australian and New Zealander spouses and children - to visit countrymen whom they may not see other times of the year and to celebrate both the old culture and the new homeland. Even the sport of the day, American football, is done on a small scale. All morning, local clubs compete in community "turkey bowl" games; the professional season does not begin until March and the coming of autumn.

Yet the quiet, private celebration of Thanksgiving has a public component to it. The annual feast was begun by seventeenth-century colonists who had come through a year of adversity to find safety on a new continent - something the entire American Commonwealth community can identify with in a profound way. From his Canberra home, George Bush, the only living American president and acknowledged leader of the Americans in the Commonwealth, gave a short statement broadcast on American radio stations nationwide. Bush entreated the community, "Now is the time for us to give thanks for another year in this bountiful land. And we remember that even when we face privations and adversities, we have much to be thankful for. It is good for our nation to acknowledge our blessings as our world continues to struggle to find peace." In the associated states of Alaska and Hawai'i, where Thanksgiving is an official state holiday, Governor Gene Therriault and King Andrew added their own words of gratitude to those of Mr. Bush.

Politics was not absent from the year's celebrations. Local chapters of the Committee to Restore the United States of America have found in this unique expression of American culture an opportunity to express nationalist feelings. "While we take time to count our blessings today," said Wellington CRUSA chairman Jason Atkinson, "We are hopeful that one day our nation will gather again in our own land, in our own country, and give thanks that we persevered through our years of exile across the ocean. Until then, may we stay vigilant and stay dedicated, and not forget our culture and our heritage."

November 25, 2009, 16.57am GMT: Scandal in Port Elizabeth:PORT ELIZABETH, New Britain - Information leaked to the papers shows clearly that the Labour and Conservative Parties were plotting a smear campaign against the British Imperial Party, in an effort to prevent their rise and preserve the status quo. There has been outrage in New Britain. The Conservative-Labour tactic appears to have backfired.

November 25, 2009, 15.00am GMT: Papal Election enters unprecedented 17th Day:RIO DE JANEIRO, Vatican Brazil - Black smoke rises yet again from the Sao Bento Chapel in Rio De Janeiro as the Cardinals of the Sacred College fail to agree; the Conclave will enter in to its seventeenth day and is turning into the longest Conclave in nearly 300 years. Large crowds are now gathering out side the Monastery.

November 24, 2009, 8:03pm GMT: Mexico, West Texas leaders to hold summit in February at Dinetah: MEXICA - The Office of the President of the United Mexican States released a brief statement today, announcing that Mexico President Marcelo Ebrard and West Texas President Mike Conaway will meet in a summit to be held in February at Rainbow Bridge, the capital city of the nation of Dinetah. The statement said further details would be forthcoming on Wednesday. Sources told Mexico's Televisa that "economic concerns", including oil and pegging the West Texas dollar to the Mexican peso, would be on the agenda.

November 24, 2009, 7:25am GMT: Summer Olympics postponed to 2012; Brazil awarded 2016 Games in surprise announcement: AUCKLAND, ANZC - The International Olympic Committee today made an expected decision in postponing the first post-Doomsday Summer Olympics to 2012, and a surprising decision in making the formal announcement today on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hosting the 2016 Games. The first post-DD Games were awarded to the ANZC in 2006 and scheduled for next September, with the bulk of the events to be held in Auckland. Auckland remains the host city, but the Games will now be held in September 2012. The IOC made an unexpected decision in announcing the host city for the 2016 Games, Rio de Janeiro, this soon; Rio was long believed to be the leading candidate but a formal announcement was not expected until December. The IOC also approved "regional Games" on each of the six continents for 2010, starting with the North American Games scheduled for next summer in the Virginian Republic.

November 22, 2009, 6:08pm GMT: Tupua reelected, conservatives gain in Samoa elections: File:ANZ-flag-HCF-small.png APIA - Samoan Chief of State Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese was officially reelected as election officials announced the results of yesterday's election Sunday morning. A nonpartisan and head of one of Samoa's royal families, Tupua's third election with no serious challengers drew immediate criticism from pro-democracy groups in Australia. In the Samoan Senate, the Conservatives, represented locally by the Liberal Party of Samoa (LPS), made strong gains, though they failed to secure an absolute majority due to the popuatity of a number of nonpartisan incumbents in several districts. The election is seen as a public vote of confidence in LPS Prime Minister Utu Abe Malae and his handling of recovery efforts after September's earthquake and tsunami. The new Senate will be seated early in January..

November 21, 2009, 5:15pm GMT (6:15pm local time): Samoa takes to the polls: File:ANZ-flag-HCF-small.png APIA - Polls opened early Saturday morning for Samoa's local elections for Chief of State and members of the Senate. For months, authorities have struggled with the logistics of providing ballot access to the thousands of Samoans who remain internally displaced after the September 29 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the islands.

November 21, 2009, 5:00pm GMT (12:00pm local time): local torch gets lit: File:800px-Confederate National Flag since Mar 4 1865 svg.png CHARLESTON, Virginia - Preparations have begun on the North American Games, a local North American version of the Olympics. It has been confirmed that along with Virginia, most of the North American survivor states are expected to participate. Aroostock, Assiniboia, Deseret, Dinetah, Kentucky, Lincoln, MSP, NAU, Prince George, Superior, Vermont, Victoria and West Texas have been confirmed to be particpating. Canada and Sanguenay are currently incapable of participation due to the war between them. The others are incapable due to lack of resources necessary to do so. Every day at noon on the government-run television network, they will take a day off the countdown board. The North American Games have been scheduled for July 4th-13th 2010.

November 20, 2009: Victoria begins prep for Operation Security Blanket: VICTORIA, Victoria - In a joint press conference the Minister of Social Projects David Widsten, and Minister of Defense Ian Kenworth announce plans for Operation Security Blanket. "With the current economic boom and our success in the former Washington Protectorate, it is our goal to push agressively into the former state of Washington in order to aid what civilians we can and bring more territory into the security of Victoria." stated Mr. Widsten. "Be assured this is not conquest, we will bring aid to those that need it and negotiate peaceful integration of territory. No one will be forced to live under a percieved opressor, and those who refuse to join will remain independent." added Mr. Kenworth. "We expect our first envoys to reach the Aberdeen area within the next few days, and negotiations have already begun with the surviving state government in Olympia. We hope bringing Olympia peacefully into the republic will help the process in the outlying regions." The Committee to Restore the United States of America responded to the news with this statement: "Again Victoria shows itself as nothing more than a land hungry imperialist state. While we applaud Victoria's efforts to aid the people of the United States, we cannot condone the absorbtion of its territories."

November 19, 2009, 3:02am GMT: Summer Olympics rumored to be put on hold until 2012: CANBERRA, ANZC - The ANZBC television network reported on its morning newscasts that the International Olympic Committee is "strongly" considering postponing the Summer Olympics until 2012. ANZBC cites sources within the IOC and the ANZC Olympic Committee as saying the IOC is concerned about holding the Games, scheduled for next September, in the same calendar year as the football World Cup. Those sources also told ANZBC that some member nations in poorer countries felt two more years would give them more time to prepare their respective national sports federations for an Olympic-type event. The Summer Games have not been held since 1980, in Moscow; moving them to 2012 would put the Games back on the traditional Olympiad timeframe, and close the gap to the next games in 2016 to four years. ANZBC said this development has no effect on the IOC's attempt to hold a limited Winter Olympics in the Alpine Confederation in February, with a full Winter Olympiad to be contested in early 2012 in the Nordic Union or Siberia.

November 19, 2009, 2:49am GMT: Mexican newspaper reports summit between West Texas, Mexico leaders: File:800px-Flag of Texas.svg.png MEXICA, D.C., Mexico - The Mexican newspaper La Jornada is reporting that Mexico President Marcelo Ebrard and West Texas President Mike Conaway will meet in a summit to take place sometime in January. The story, to be published in La Jornada's Thursday edition, reports that the summit will cap ongoing talks between various representatives of both nations to reestablish formal relations and trade. Neither Ebrard nor Conaway's offices had any immediate comment to Mexican television on the story. It story cites sources in both administrations as stating that a formal announcement will be made early next week and that Mexican businessman George W. Bush has been "heavily involved" in ongoing negotiations between both countries.

November 18, 2009, 10:06pm GMT: Greece and Singapore final qualifiers for 2010 football World Cup tournament: LUQUE, Paraguay - Greece and Singapore's national football teams won their respective playoff series on Wednesday, qualifying for the 2010 World Cup tournament in the Celtic Alliance. Singapore, at home against Guyana, played to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time; because both teams drew 2-2 last week in Guyana, they went to penalty kicks to decide the series. Both teams made their first seven kicks. In the eighth round, Guyana's J.T. Rodriguez saw his shot hit the crossbar and bounce over the goal. Singapore's Daud then fired a shot to the right side of the goal, barely past goalkeeper Calvin Williams to send Singapore to Dublin. In Trondheim, Charisteas's first-half goal was enough to give Greece a 1-0 win over host Norway; Greece advanced 2-0 on aggregate.

November 18, 2009, 3:11pm GMT: Portland, Tennessee accepts Virginia offer with conditions: PORTLAND, Tennessee - Portland mayor Ken Wilber informed Virginia President-General Jay Rockefeller and League of Nations director Brant McAllister that Portland would accept Virginia's offer to help Portland "secure" middle Tennessee. "We accept Virginia's kind offer, with the conditions that we retain our independence while we discuss all of our future political options amongst ourselves." League of Nations Radio also reported that Portland requested LoN peacekeepers assist Virginia troops in all military endeavors, and that all parties involved be willing to negotiate with any survivor communities in western Tennessee, plus the LoN-recognized provisional republics of East Tennessee and Blue Ridge, regarding any political or military unions. "We are, truly, all Americans, and we are grateful for Virginia's willingness to assist us and work with us," Wilber said. "We cannot change the events that led us here, but we can work together for a bright future for all of us."

November 16, 2009, 10:45pm GMT: League of Nations aware of Virginia offers for aid to southern US region: NUEVA GERONA, Cuba - League of Nations southern United States of America Command Brant McAllister said he and the LoN headquarters in Tonga are aware of the Virginia Republic's offers for aid to the city of Portland, Tennessee. McAllister said he praised Virginia's willingness to extend aid to former U.S. survivor states, but also noted Portland's questions about the offer. "They (Portland) are saying they have held onto control of their own region for the past 25 years, and now as soon as they become aware of the world around them, one of the republics is pressing them on political issues," McAllister said. "It is clear that Virginia's offer would have Portland in political control of the entire state, but Virginia would be the only party of the two that would be able to enforce the peace. I've said this before, but these citystates have been in the region longer than anyone else, and our position remains they need to be able to choose their own destiny, just as Cave City did, without pressure from the LoN nor any other entity." Cave City voted late last week to join the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

November 16, 2009, 2:28pm GMT: Douglas comments on LoN southern US command: File:Vermont Flag.png MIDLAND, West Texas - Vermont President Jim Douglas told West Texas Radio this morning that he was happy to see the League of Nations and Mexico taking an active role in reconstruction efforts for the southern former United States. In a live interview done before Douglas left Midland International Airport for the Republic of Lincoln, Douglas said "I'm happy to see Mexico leading this thing. There are political and business leaders there who lived in that region, and they have a vested interest in helping rebuild that area to modern standards. The best scenario is for the LoN to work with all North American nations in this endeavor, and if the LoN invites Vermont to participate, we'll certainly do our part." Douglas stated he was heading to Kentucky that day to meet with President Jim Bunning before returning to Vermont Wednesday night.
