March 3, 2009, 07:45pm GMT: I.I.I.L. New Indonesian constitution accepted
YOGYAKARTA - Thanks to a surprisingly large voter turnout of reportedly 78% the new Indonesian constitution has been accepted by 64,5% in a nationwide plebiscite yesterday. The new constitution is meant to replace the various emergency laws enacted since Doomsday and shall reestablish stble political ground within the league's territory. Acehnese Sultan di Hoseini and the ANZC government reacted positively as the new constitution does not exppressively count Aceh and ANZC-associated territories of Papua and Timor as part of Indonesia.

Red Cross (1983: Doomsday) Red Cross HQ opened in Geneva
The new HQ of the International Red Cross was opened in Geneva after 2 years of construction. LoN SecGen uses his opening speech to urge a final breakthrough in the Sicily peace talks.

Suicide bomb kills 28 in Yogyakarta: A suicide bomb detonated early tonight in a car parked in front of the IIIL Ministry of Interior in Yogyakarta. 28 are reported dead.
February 12, 2009, 6:45pm GMT: File:HawaiiFlagOTL.PNG Governor Lingle steps down: Citing her worsening skin cancer, Hawaiian Governor Linda Lingle resigned this morning. King Andrew has confirmed Angel Pilago as the Free State's new governor.
January 12th, 2009: LON takes over Space Centre: 
In a small Ceremony at Kourou, control of the Guyana Space Centre is transferred to the new LoN Space Operations Authority (SpOA).
January 1st, 2009, 0:05 GMT: World rings in 2009: New Year Celebrations are taking place around the world. In Canberra and Auckland large fireworks and thousands of people are seen on the street. In Europe, festivities are largely being cancelled due to the Sicilian crisis. The NewsHour team whishes a good and happy new Year 2009 to everyone.
December 29th, 11:02am GMT: Cease-Fire in Sicily: File:Sicily.png After days of absolute silence, the Sicily government has surprisingly offered unconditional peace talks to begin on January 1st to "begin a new peaceful year" ADC, ANZC, and LoN accept the offer.
Sicilian Crisis: December 25th,11:13am GMT: File:Sicily.png Sicilian Government accuses the Alpine Confederation of a planned shoot-down and names the incident an "Act of War"
December 25th, 10:45am GMT: Alpine Confed. shoots down Sicilian plane: The Alpine Defense Minister announces the shoot-down of a Sicily fighter jet above the City of Venice. He claims the jet having ignored repeated warnings before being intercepted by alpine jets.
Politics: December 19th, 4:45am GMT: File:Sicily.png Reactions to Sicily's offer are diverse. Alpine Confederation, ADC and ANZC declare all forces in the Mediterrenean will remain on alert condition BETA. SAC spokespersons welcome the Sicilian offer and call the LoN High Council to allow immediate aid convoys to be dispatched.
December 12 2008: Celts step up anti-Sicillian rhetoric: File:Celtic alliance flag.gif As talks break down between the LON and Siclian president Giacamo Bertolucci, Celtic Alllience Prime minister Mark Cosgrove stated "We will not tolerate this act of aggression." and even mentioned the possibility of using airstrikes against Sicily.
INTRODUCTION
The Point of Divergence of the 1983: Doomsday- Timeline is a well-known though often underestimated event that took place on 26th of September in the year 1983.
On that day, *here* Colonel Stanislav Petrov was watch officer on duty at the Serpukhov-15 bunker near Moscow, which was monitoring for a US missile attack on the Soviet Union.
Suddenly, the computer-based warning systems reported several US Nuclear Missiles approaching Soviet territory. "Here", Colonel Petrov believed the information to be false and did not alert the Kremlin to the data he was receiving. Given Cold War tensions at the time, such information would likely have convinced the Soviets that the US had launched a first strike attempting to "cut off the head" and launched their forces, in the belief it was a "counter-strike", not a first-strike.
Consequently, since the world public knows about this event, it is now often considered to have been the moment closest to a nuclear war between the USSR and the USA in the whole Cold War. Colonel Petrov has in fact been honoured as one of the few true "world saviours" and several documentaries prove the dangerousity of this event.
This Timeline postulates the results after Colonel Petrov being sent to another installation several days before September 26th. The officer now on duty on September 26th takes the alert as correct and immediately contacts his superiors. Within minutes, the leaders decide to launch the whole Soviet Nuclear Arsenal. Logically, the Americans react by launching as well. When the first alerted missile is proved to be a false alarm, it is already too late. Thousands of nuclear warheads consequently detonate at targets worldwide, mainly in the northern hemisphere. As The People's Republic of China was surprisingly attacked by Soviet missiles as well,part of their arsenal is launched too.
The results of this total nuclear exchange are close to the forecasts of almost complete worldwide destruction and "nuclear holocaust" as predicted by many scientists of that time, resulting in as much as two billion people killed initially, possibly another two billion in the subsequent environmental disaster.
This LIVE -Timeline currently covers the 25 years after the event -quickly named after the biblical "Doomsday"- from the direct aftermath up to the present day worldwide situation.
The world largely devastated, most of the northern and parts of the southern hemisphere in ruins, the estimated 800 million survivors desperately try to keep together what is left of human society. With this they are facing challenges seemingly impossible.
After an incredibly hard and horrifying aftermath during the first few years after Doomsday, at least a few regions, territories and countries stabilize and master basic problems such as food and medical supply. As time passes and the recovery continues, new - sometimes suprising- alliances and a new, fragile world order emerge and manifest. Initial hopes of some survivors for a united mankind or at least warfare and destruction being ended forever quickly prove false. Indeed, the world is lightyears away from any utopian imaginations. Famine, diseases and lack of resources provoke skirmishes and wars in large parts of the world thus often crushing all recovery.
But as some surviving and newly founded nations- particularly a unified Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand and a South American Confederation- prove able to master the problems and even intervene internationally, human extinction seems to be finally avoided.
Now, more than 25 years after "Doomsday" bringing mankind at the edge of total extinction, the foundation of the new "League of Nations" on September 26th 2008- has awakened a glance of hope for a possibly more peaceful future for mankind...
But nonetheless, a new threat is emanating once more in the heart of the Old World, endangering much which has been achieved within the quarter of a century...
