On the evening of 25 September, 1983, the 35th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony were being held in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, CA, located about ten miles north of downtown Los Angeles. At approximately 6:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time, the ceremony was interrupted by the announcement of the launching of Soviet nuclear missiles against the United States.

Background[]

The Ceremony[]

Hosting the 35th Primetime Emmy Awards were Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers; it was being broadcast by NBC on a time delay to allow broadcast on the East Coast.

The Doomsday Announcement[]

Shortly after NBC Television had abruptly cut away from the ceremony without the knowledge of either hosts or the audience, it is believed NBC president Brandon Tartikoff phoned the Auditorium to alert attendees of the situation. A few moments later, one of the venue's security guards is said to have rushed onto the ceremony stage and announced that hundreds of ballistic missiles sent from the Soviet Union were about to hit the United States.

Legacy[]

After the announcement of the incoming Soviet missiles, the venue went into a state of panic due to the fact that the destruction of Los Angeles was imminent since the city was a main target for the Soviets due to its large population and its strategic importance. The area around the venue was in utter chaos as people tried to evacuate north but were met by gridlock on the I-210, I-5, and any highway or road leading out of the Los Angeles Metro area. From the personal accounts of survivors who were in the city that day say, multiple celebrities tried to evacuate from the chaos of Los Angeles but couldn't make it out in time as the last AP Report received from the Los Angeles area states at 6:16 PM PST, large explosions and shaking were reported south of the city. As of the thirtieth anniversary of Doomsday on September 25th, 2023, researchers who've interviewed residents from Santa Cruz, Ventura, all the way down to Baja California, and Mexico City report that no one who attended the ceremony that day survived. In 2015, urban explorers roaming the ruins of Los Angeles and Southern California as a whole visited Pasadena and explored the Civic Auditorium and found it in a state of ruin with human remains of what might have been celebrities who attended the ceremony but weren't able to leave in time. In the eyes of the general population who were watching the ceremony that day all across the former-United States, the 1983 Emmy Awards resembles the last few moments that people spent with friends, family, and others before the hell that was to come. Tapes of the ceremony exist across Mexico, Texas, Hawaii, and in memorial museums in Canberra.
