Republicans
President George H.W. Bush was re-nominated for a second term. Vice President Bob Dole of Kansas also achieved re-nomination with little challenge.
Democrats
The Democrats nominated former Vice President Walter Mondale, who defeated challenges from several others, notably Gary Hart and Jesse Jackson. For Vice President, they nominated Rep. Geraldine Ferraro.
Electoral College Result:
Bush/Dole: 290
Mondale/Ferraro: 248
Popular Result
Bush/Dole: 51%
Mondale/Ferraro: 47%
Despite the energy brought to the Democratic campaign by Congresswoman Ferraro (the first woman to be nominated to a presidential ticket in U.S. history), the resurgent U.S. economy, coupled with satisfaction with a more assertive foreign policy stance and lingering nostalgia for the slain foamer President Reagan (who was assassinated in March 1981 after less than 2 months in office) ensured a triumph to the Republican incumbents.
