The 1985 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships was the 47th edition of the Ice Hockey World Championships hosted by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The tournament also doubled as the 58th European Championships. Teams participated at three levels of competition. It took place between 7 and 24 February 1985 in Prague and Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. The venues were the Sportovní hala ČSTV and the Zimní stadion Slavia in Prague and Zimný štadión Ondreja Nepelu in Bratislava. Canada was the defending champion, having won the previous championship.

This was a historic tournament in a few respects. The Soviets were playing without goaltender Vladislav Tretiak for the first time since 1969. Despite Canada's silver medal, the first round saw Canada lose to the Americans for the first time at the World Championship and in the professional era. A young Mario Lemieux got his senior international debut for Canada, noting four goals and 10 points. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the tournament was Sweden's poor play. After having won silver medals in 1983 expectations were high, but they had their worst finish since 1937. Sergei Makarov was the leading scorer and Peter Šťastný was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

The host, Czechoslovakia, became world champions for the seventh time as they defeated Canada 5–3 in the final. The Soviet Union won their 20th European title. For the European Championship, only games between European sides in the first round are included. The tournament finished on a sour note when the U.S. and Soviet Union faced off against each other for the bronze medal. Several fights broke out, resulting in suspensions of coaches Viktor Tikhonov and Bob Johnson, as well as players Irek Gimayev, Vyacheslav Fetisov and Mike Ramsey. Additionally referee Kjell Lind was disciplined for failing to keep control of the game.
