The 1988 World Cup was hosted in Italy in June and July 1988. The games were part of the traditional rotation between Europe and the Western Hemisphere in hosting the Cup. The World Cup was won by reigning champions Argentina, becoming the first title holders to ever repeat and the first (and to date only) team from outside of Europe to win a World Cup on European soil.
