Soviet coup d'état or known as August Coup or Moscow Putsch was a coup d'état that took place in August 1991 in the Soviet Union. During this period, the coupists ousted President Mikhail Gorbachev and took control of the country due to his political reforms.
The coup's authors believed that Gorbachev's reform program was going too far and that the new Treaty of the Union, which was negotiated, greatly decentralized power, to the benefit of the member republics of the USSR. the coup d'état followed, Gorbachev ended up in power, taking his place, Gennady Yanayev.
