The 1994 Brazil Presidential Election was held in unique round, o 2 October 1994. It was the second presidential election in the country after the promulgation of the Federal Constitution of 1988. The cardiologist Enéas Carneiro (Patriot Party) defeated the union leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazilian Social Democracy Party), with 54,314,961 votes against the opponent's 37,122,127.

On this occasion there was the choice of President and Vice President, State Governors, Senators (2 per State), Federal Deputies and State Deputies throughout Brazil.

Background[]

Itamar Franco assumed the office on 1 January 1991. His first mission was to carry out a plebiscite provided for by the 1988 Constitution. In the vote, the population would decide which form of government should be adopted in the country. At the end of the count, the presidential republic ended up being preserved with more than half of the valid votes. Meanwhile, economic issues continued to alarm the population as a whole.

In the second half of 1992, inflation managed to fall from 1972.91% to 972.92% (average 999.99%). In early 1993, Inflation dropped to 693% (average 279.92%) and at the end of the same year it fell to 471.88% (average of 321.12%). In 1994, inflation had dropped to 198.97%, making Brazil recover from the crisis.

Despite the administration's success, President Itamar didn't want to be reelected and Progressives had no interest in running for the 1994 election.

Enéas Carneiro, known candidate famous for his conservative and nationalist politics and his opposition to communism and neoliberalism. He ran for president in 1990, taking third place and ran again in the 1994 elections. Enéas ran for gun expansion, strong investment by the armed forces and a more interventionist state. For the position of vice president, Enéas chose the Rio de Janeiro federal deputy Francisco Dornelles

Lula da Silva, also a candidate in the last election, ran for second time in 1994. For running mate, Lula chose Leonel Brizola, former governor of Rio de Janeiro and one of the greatest leaders of the Brazilian left.
