The United States presidential election of 2000 was held on Tuesday, November 7, 2000, to elect the President of the United States. Democratic nominee Al Gore, the incumbent vice president defeated Republican candidate George W. Bush, the governor of Texas and eldest son of the 41st president, George H. W. Bush. The election was considered a largely competitive one. However, Clinton's popularity helped Gore win.
