The 2017 Czechoslovak federal elections will be held in or before May 2017. It will elect all 300 seats in the Federal Assembly were up for election, with MPs elected by party-list proportional representation.
The leading party in the last election, the Czechoslovak Social Democracy (ČSD), negotiated with the Czechoslovak National Social Party (ČSNS) and the Green Party (SZ) to form a government. The three parties reached an agreement and officially signed a coalition pact on 18 June 2013. Robert Fico became prime minister.
Electoral system[]
The 300 members of the Chamber of Deputies are elected from 25 multi-member constituencies using open list proportional representation, in which they can give preferential votes for up to four candidates on their chosen list. Seats are allocated using the d'Hondt method, with an electoral threshold of single 2% for parties, 4% for two-party alliances, 7% for three-party alliances and 10% for alliances of four or more parties. Candidates who receive preferential votes from more than 5% of voters are moved to the top of their list, and in cases where more than one candidate receives over 5% of the preferential votes, they are ranked in order of votes received.
