Due to his status as a War Hero in the Third World War, François Lecointre was able to garner popular support and sought the nomination of the Debout La France party. The party, having non-interventionist and Europskeptical foreign policy positions, gained support as French citizens wanted to pursue a policy of neutrality following the end of the war in order to ensure no more French lives would be lost in future conflicts.
