Selection Process

During the third Republican debate in September 2019, Haley intially promised to pick the runner up should she win the nomination. However, in a Janaury 2020 debate, Haley walked back on that promise, and stated she would pick "the best person for the job." Typically, the party's nominee will select a running mate after meeting with and vetting multiple indivudals, and makes a final decision before the party's convention.

On May 1, 2020, the Haley Campaign announced that a five-person committee had been formed to select a running mate. The Committee consists of Steve Schimdt (Chief Policy Advisor), Rick Davis (Operations Chief), Martha Roby (Congresswoman from Alabama and National Co-Chair), Ivanka Trump (Daughter of and Policy Advisor to former candidate Donald Trump), and John Weaver (Kasich Advisor).

As of May 10, 2020, the New York Times reports that the select committee has meet with at least two dozen indivudals, including former 2020 candidates, governors, members of congress, buisnuess and "community" leaders.

The New York Times Reported that Cathy McMorris-Rodgers had emerged as a dark-horse favorite among members of the Haley Campaign, citing her fundraising ablities and connections on Capitol Hill. Congresswoman McMorris-Rodgers stated that she had been in touch with members of the Committee, but was unaware if any favorites had emerged. The NYT also reported that Cruz, Baker, Sessions, Trump, and at least 8 others remained in contention.

On May 28, 2020, Ivanka Trump resigned from the Selection Committee, amid rumor that she is under consideration for the Vice Presidential Slot herself. The Haley campaign and Trump declined to comment on such rumors. She was replaced on the Committee by Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming.

Intial Shortlist

On May 13, 2020, POLITICO reported that the Haley Campaign had internally created an initial short list, with 12 names in consideration. On May 24th, Congresswoman Martha Roby (whom Haley appointed to her Vice Presidential Selection Committee) stated that the committee had formed "a clear top tier," but added that they where still interviewing individuals outside of that top tier.  Rick Davis, chair of the selection committee, stated that the internal timeline was to interview candidates through out May, curate an initial shortlist to vet, and then announce by Mid-to-Late July.
