The 2020 United States presidential election was held on November 3, 2020, with the runoff being held on November 24, 2020 due to no candidate winning a majority of the popular vote.
The election occurred during a tumultuous time in American politics. Narrowly elected in 2016, President Ted Cruz of the center right National Party, was expelled from the party in 2018 and formed Americana Legacy. He was extraordinarily unpopular, reaching an approval rating of 7% versus 76% in favor of his resignation. Despite mass demonstrations against his governance, Cruz refused to step down and served the duration of his term in office. Due to being convicted of breaking campaign finance laws, Cruz was ineligible to run in 2020.
