The 2022 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was a military operation conducted by Iraq from 22 August 2022 to 7 October 2022. The invasion was part of the 2022 Middle Eastern War, and was the first major event. Following territorial gains, Iraq began annexing and occupying Kuwait, asserting it as its 19th province. The invasion caused Kuwait to become a centre for much of the activity in the southern front of the 2022 Middle Eastern War.
Internationally, the invasion was widely condemned. Countries with military bases in Kuwait are engaging in a NATO evacuation operation of military personnel, foreign citizens and refugees. Similarly, some NATO countries have helped provide training to Kuwaiti troops, as well as announced new defence treaties that allow for further co-operation between NATO and Kuwaiti troops.
The invasion occurred 32 years after the 1990 invasion, which took place on 2 August 1990. The 1990 invasion resulted in the Gulf War that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi control. The 2022 invasion has drawn comparisons to the 1990 invasion as a result, with some analysts making predictions for then-upcoming events based on the events of the 1990 invasion.
