The Fifty-Sixth Congress of the Union was a meeting of the legislative branch of the Government of Cygnia, composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives, from 3 January 2009 to 2 November 2012, during the Rudd and First Gillard Governments' tenures. The 2008 federal elections returned a Labour majority in the House of Representatives, allowing them to form government under Kevin Rudd.
