A Broken System

It’s 2021, and the American political system is broken. With lobbyists buying corrupt politicians, while others claim the previous election was stolen (though with no proof). Meanwhile the public and electorate is more divided than ever, more polarized than ever.

But what if it was worse?

What if the system isn't only broken, it's irreparable.

And this is what the Broken System alternate history timeline is about. It takes place in a world where voters are angrier than ever—at politicians, at compromisers, at the establishment. Congress and the White House seem incapable of working together on anything, even when their interests align. With lawmaking at a standstill, the president’s use of executive orders and regulatory discretion has reached a level that Congress views as dictatorial—not that Congress can do anything about it, except file lawsuits that the divided Supreme Court, its two vacancies unfilled, has been unable to resolve.

Point of Divergence[]

The timeline's point of divergence is in 1972, when the Watergate break-in occurred. In this alternate timeline, the break in was much worse. And when the public found out in 1973, many were furious, and called for Nixon to be removed from office. Yet further changes also occurred, such as Reagan being assassinated, and Bill Clinton's affair revealed in 1993.
