Abkhazia is an de facto country in the South Caucasus, de jure it is fully a part of Georgia. Indepedence was declared in July 1977 within the Caucasian war (1977-1986).
Demographics[]
Abkhazia has a particularly interesting demographic history, there were many periods where Abkhazians weren't even the biggest ethnic group. The demographic history was shaped by many wars and conflicts and in 2020 it looked like this:
- 153,781 Abkhazians (54.8%)
- 62,814 Armenian (22.4%)
- 25,142 Russians (9%)
- 19,336 Georgians (6.9%)
- 12,541 Greeks (4.5%)
- 6,514 other (2.3%)
Total: 280,128
If the Georgian controled areas are counted the data looks like this:
- 160,802 Abkhazians (43.9%)
- 90,554 Georgians (24.7%)
- 65,175 Armenian (17.8%)
- 26,234 Russians (7.2%)
- 15,583 Greeks (4.3%)
- 7,782 other (2.1%)
Total: 366,130
Overall the area shows a significant decline since the fall of communism, in 1982 the population was around 600 thousand.
