Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Upper Austria, German Empire to a anti-clerical father and a Roman Catholic mother, and was raised near Linz. He lived in Vienna later in the first decade of the 1900s, and while there, He later Adopted Marxism-Leninism while working at Vienna University as a librarian, he dictated the first volume of his autobiography and political manifesto Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"). He was decorated during his service in the German Army in World War I, receiving the Iron Cross. Adolf Karl Hitler was born on 20 April 1889 in Braunau am Inn, a town in the German Empire (which is present-day near the border with Germany), He was the fourth of six children to Alois Hitler (1848-1918) and Klara Pölzl (pronounced Poelzl) (1860-1949), Two siblings had died in infancy, before Hitler was born, Also living in the household were Alois's children from his first marriage: Alois Jr. (born 1882), Angela (born 1883), , His paternal grandfather Ludwig Gerhard Hitler (1809-1890) was a Colonel of the Austrian army during the Rhomanian-German Wars. Alois had made a successful career in the customs bureau and wanted Adolf and Edmund to follow in his footsteps.
