Africa was a crucial part of the Allied effort during the Second Great War. Free France operated from Africa, and the British Empire had important sources of resources in the continent. However the war effort was a burden to the Africans, and the desire of autonomy was strong. After the initial efforts from the Axis Powers, particularly Italy to consolidate and augment her colonies in Africa, the Axis begun to support many autonomic movements.
French Africa fell apart after the peace of 1952, except for Algeria and Tunisia, and several off-shore islands.
Britain moved into granting autonomy and plain independence to her colonies under British Commonwealth status. Britain took measures to ensure that the independent states would be part of the alliance against the Axis, up to 1986.
