The people of Africa have been persecuted for the last 3000 years, but have recently become some of the powerful nations in the world. Most of Africa started out as a bunch of colonies by European countries, but all of them gained independence by 1796. Many Africans were sold into slavery, but it's been illegal in every country since 1957.
