Albert Arnold Gore Jr. (born March 31, 1948) is an American politician and enviromentalist who served as the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009. Prior to his presidency he served as Vice President under president Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001, the Junior United States Senator from the state of Tennessee alongside Jim Sasser from 1985 to 1993 and a member of the House of Representatives from the 4th and 6th district of Tennessee from 1977 to 1985. After finishing his term in 2009 he remained active in American public life, working in climate change activism and campaigning for Democratic nominee and former First Lady Hillary Clinton in 2012.
Al Gore was born in Washington D.C., United States. His father was a U.S. representative from Tennessee's 4th district and a U.S. senator from there. After graduating from Harvard in 1969 Albert got drafted into the United States Army. In 1970 he married Tipper Gore and a year later, in 1971 he got sent to Vietnam, where he stationed in Biên Hòa with the 20th engineer brigade. He received an honorary discharge later that year and upon his return to Tennessee he attended Vanderbilt University Divinity School for a year, all the while working night shifts for The Tennessean newspaper as an investigative reporter. He exposed corruption in the Nashville's Metro Council, which resulted in arrest for two councilmen. In 1974 he took a leave of abscense there and commited himself to attending Vanderbilt University Law School, he quit abruptly after finidng out his father's former House seat was about to be vacated. He served in Congress for 16 years, attempting twice to receive the Democratic nomination for the Presidency in 1988 and 1992, he eventually became Bill Clinton's running mate.
Al Gore announced his intention to run in June of 1999, he fought a very narrow primary field and handily received the Democratic nomination, choosing House Minority Leader and U.S. Representative from Missouri's 3rd district Dick Gephardt as his running mate. On election night the election was called to George W. Bush, the Republican nominee, however, after multiple lawsuits and a recount in the state of Tennessee Gore was pronounced as the President-Elect. After a swift transition he was sworn-in on 20th January 2001. Upon his first 100 days in office he attempted to pass his hallmark programs of Enviromental Regulation act of 2001 and tax cuts for the middle and upper class, failing in passing meaningful healthcare expansion. He sworn in pro–choice, socially liberal judges. After the September 11th attacks in Washington D.C. and New York president Gore supported an invasion on Afganistan with the intention of capturing terrorist and war criminal Osama Bin Laden, who's organisation, Al Queda, claimed responsibility for the attack. He won reelection in a landslide against Republican Ron Paul.
His second term was marked by the stalemate in Afghanistan. He nominated two justices to the Supreme Court. Reaching multiple free trade agreements. The panic due to the appearance of the Zica virus in the United States and the beginning of the Great Recession caused his popularity to drop to 49%. He left office in 2009 amidst U.S. losses in Afghanistan and Russian aggression in the Caucasus region. Gore was succedeed as President by senator John McCain. After his term in office his public image approved through the years, as he commited himself to climate change activism, in 2012 and 2016 respectivelly he campaigned for nominees Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
