The Alaskan Commonwealth (Russian: Аляскинское Содружество, Alyaskinskoye Sodruzhestvo) was a former nation located in the Pacific Northwestern portion of North America, and was the initial government for modern day Alaska. Established on January 1, 1908, the Alaskan Commonwealth was established as an autonomous government for what had been the American territories of the Russian Empire. The Commonwealth lasted until February 1917, when the southernmost governorates declared independence as the Republic of Oregon, and ceased to exist by November 1917, with the remaining regions becoming the Alaskan Republic.
