Alba (Gaelic), or Scotland (Scots), is a parliamentary republic located in the northern third of the British isles. Founded by the MacAlpin dynasty, a Dalriadic ruling house which subjugated the Pictish inhabitants of northern Britain, Alba dates back to the 800s, and has a survived invasions by Vikings and Angles. More recently, Alba has acted as the leader of the Celtic League, in rivalry with Anglia to the south, and remains a significant naval and mercantile power. Scotland was convulsed by a noble revolt which replaced the Stewart dynasty in the 1500s, in which Anglia annexed much of its southern territory. Dominated by the Gaelic lords of its periphery, who controlled a powerless monarchy, Scotland fought a series of wars against Anglian domination through the 1500s - during the 1610s-20s, it was effectively under Anglian occupation. Convulsed by republican and reformist religious sentiments emanating from its Iroquois-influenced New World territories, Scotland gradually weakened its nobles, abandoned the monarchy, and founded the Celtic League in the 1700s, constructing a network of pan-Atlantic defensive alliances designed to contain Anglia. Since then, the two states have cycled through periods of détente and renewed tensions, although Scotland has been able to maintain its independence - and, indeed, its aggressive libertinism and political radicalism seems designed to reject the staid political culture of Anglia as vociferously as possible.
