Albania (Albanian: Shqipëri or Shqipëria), officially known as the Albanian Kingdom (Mbretëria Shqiptare), is a sovereign state located in the Balkans of Southeastern Europe. The nation is bordered by Yugoslavia in the north, Greece in the south, and a maritime border with Italy across the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
While the region of Albania had been under the rule of many states and peoples, such as the Illyrians, Thracians, Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and most lately the Ottomans, there had been many attempts for an independent nation in the region, such as the Principality of Arbër in the 12th century, the Kingdom of Albania and the Principality of Albania formed between the 13th and 14th centuries, and most famously of all the League of Lezhë, led by Skanderbeg, it wouldn't be until the early 20th century when an independent Albanian nation would be formed. From 1925 to 1939 it would be led by Zog I, under a monarchy. It would be conquered by Germany during WWII, and it would fall under Soviet influence during the Cold War. The Revolutions of 1991 ended the socialist country, and in 1997, the current constitution would be written, establishing the modern kingdom.
