Algeria (French: Algérie, Arabic: الجزائر al-Jazā'ir, Berber: ⴷⵣⴰⵢⴻⵔ Dzayer), also sometimes unofficially referred to as French Algeria (French: Algérie Française, Arabic: الجزائر الفرنسية al-Jaza'ir al-Fransiyah) is a country in Northern Africa in a crown union with France. It borders Italy to its east, French West Africa to its south, Morocco, the Rif and the Spanish colony of Spanish Sahara to its west, and the Mediterranean Sea to its north. The country is a constitutional monarchy whose head of state is the French Emperor. First conquered by the French in 1830, the country first became a protectorate of France, then an outright colony, before becoming a de jure independent state after a period of widespread disorders towards the end of the Great War; however, several treaties give large powers to the French government in regards to Algerian administration.
The country was settled over the decades with many French immigrants known as pieds-noirs (black-feet), and today the demographic makeup of the country consists of native Arabs and Berbers, people of French descent, and many mixed descendants of both. The official languages are French and Arabic, but Berber dialects are used in some provinces. The country is divided in six administrative provinces: Alger, Aures, Constantinie, Kabylia, Orania and Sahara.
Exports of natural gas are the backbone of the country's economy, which also prides itself on a strong oil industry and naval industry. The ports of Algiers, the national capital, and Oran are among the most important commerical ports of the western Mediterranean. Agriculture is also well developed in the northern part of the country.
