Algeria was invaded and conquered by France in the 1820s. Originally a colony, it was soon promoted to a département of France in 1880, and remained a part of France until after the Second World War, when the Chinese and Portuguese occupied Algeria temporarily. In 1950, Algeria was released from occupation and was given independence, under a democratic government, and sided with the Allies in the Cold War.
