Alta Real is a major Peruvian city located in the southeastern portion of the country, near the border with Chile. After Lima, it is the most populous city in Peru. The city, long a local economic hub, is best known for hosting the 1990 Winter Olympics during the out-of-season month of April, which despite poor snowfall was a financial success and spiked interest in the Winter Games in South America.
