Van Diemen's Land was the name given to the island by the first European to spot it, Abel Tasman. It remained the name for it throughout its British colonisation until it was awarded responsible governance by Great Britain, when the name was changed to Tasmania, as the local free settlers thought Van Diemen's land was too closely associated with the colony's dark convict past.
