Angela Dorothea Merkel (July 17, 1954) is a German politician serving as the chancellor of Germany from 2006 to 2017. She served as the leader of the Opposition from 2003 to 2006 and as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 2001 to 2017. A member of the CDU, Merkel is the first female chancellor of Germany. During her tenure as Chancellor, Merkel has been frequently referred to as the de facto leader of the European Union and the most powerful woman in the world.
