Arkhangelsk is a Slavic autonomous region in Russia.

Almost all of it is covered by Russian taiga, a type of cold coniferous forest dominated by pine, spruce, and larch. There are several large areas in the middle of taiga are overtly devoid of trees and covered by swamps, which on occasion bubble methane gas. In the more fertile floodplains of the rivers, there are some farms and several bands of native reindeer herders in the agriculturally marginal meadows.

Fishing is a minor business on the tundra covered islands.

There is only tundra of the Nenets region, which also contains a notable number of bigger lakes. The river basin of the Pinega is characteristic of the karst and has a number of caves in the region.

Logging and sawmilling is heavy around Kudemskaya, Konetsgorskaya, Loyginskaya, Nyubskaya, Udimskaya, Kotlassky, Zelennikovskaya, Dimskaya and Kudemskaya, of which most logs and related wood products are exported. Coal is imported from the former Komi Region and parts of Perm Krai. Roads of various quality, narrow gauge railways and light aircraft connect most places with Arkhangelsk, Perm, Petroskoi, Kirov and the Komi mines. Plesetsk Cosmodrome has operated on occasion since 1992 and has launched several modest satellites for several friendly and neutral states.

Arkhangelsk has been a major port for the last 300 years, but traffic has slackened off quite a bit since 1992.

The 200-year-old industrial region has a developed fishery, forestry, woodworking, cellulose, and paper industry.

The nation has large reserves of natural resources: Lumber (timber), oil, bauxite, titanium, gold, manganese, and basalt.

In 2011, the paper production and related industries were responsible for just under 55% of all industrial production of the nation, with food production at 11% and timber processing (excluding paper production) and furniture production at 12%.

The principal industrial centers are are in Arkhangelsk are the major shipyards in Arkhangelsk city and Severodvinsk (including Sevmash), many pulp and paper mills in Koryazhma and Novodvinsk, and bauxite extraction plant in Severoonezhsk.

Portable radios are made in a small factory in Kudemskaya. Almost all other towns has some timber works, unless they are on the coast, where fishing also plays a major role in the economy.
