Armenia, officially the Kingdom of Armenia, is a landlocked country in the Caucasus. It borders Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and West Persia to the south and west. Its capital and largest city is Yerevan. The most attended religious institution in Armenia is the Armenian Apostolic Church, which follows a form of Oriental Orthodoxy.

Its surface area of 29,743 square kilometers makes Armenia the 38th-largest country in Asia and the 125th-largest in the world. With a population of over 3.5 million inhabitants, it is the 39th-most populous country in Asia and the 113th in the world. In 2022 Armenia had a fertillity rate of 2.32.

History[]

Early history[]

Armenia had won its independence during the Great War with aid from West Persia. The West Persians created puppet monarchies in Armenia and Azerbaijan as Georgia's monarchy gained independence. Armenia's ruler was to be Tatos Saghatel Kardashian. Tatos Saghatel Kardashian was declared Tatos I, King of Armenia. However, before Tatos was crowned as monarch, the allies won the war and a republic was installed instead. The Republic of Armenia had fallen and the Soviets took over the nation as Tatos and his family fled to America.

Byzantine-Armenian War Differently

Height of Armenian territorial control during the Byzantine-Armenian War (1978)

Armenian Military Junta (1982–1990)[]

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, the Armenian military took over the Armenian SSR and overthrew the regime in place there in favor of direct military rule. Sergey Aganov, a former general of the Soviet Union, had taken over Armenia and began to do right wing, nationalist reforms in the country.

Some people affiliated with the former General wanted him to restore the Armenian monarchy and allow Robert Kardashian and his family to return to Armenia. However, the referendum for monarchy or continued Nationalist Dictatorship failed to commence as Armenian Liberals ousted the military regime to prevent putting the monarchy back into power or continuing the dictatorship. The downfall of the military regime was caused by a series of wars fought with Rhomania, Georgia, and West Persia over control of the Armenian populated regions of eastern Anatolia. While Armenia launched an initial offensive alongside an Armenian insurgency, it would be stopped short of Trebizond.

After failing to capture Trebizond, the Armenian supply lines within Anatolia would begin to collapse due to Rhomanian bombing and sabotage campaigns. By 1979, the Armenian military had been pushed out of Rhomanian and West Persian territory, being forced back to the Armenian border. A joint Rhomanian-West Persian coalition would come close within 5 kilometers of Yerevan before liberal protests ousted the Aganov Junta and a new republic was proclaimed. A treaty between the new government and the three nations would be signed on April 28th, 1980: formally ending the war.

Liberalisation (1990-2006)[]

Democratic backsliding and pro-Russian sentiment (2006–2021)[]

The election of President Serzh Sargsyan in 2007 marked a period of Democratic backsliding within Armenia. As President, Sargsyan would appoint political allies to top positions in the courts and militaries. This would allow for the Sargsyan government to implement laws that benefitted him and his allies personally at the expense of Armenia's democratic institutions.

War with West Persia and occupation (2021–2022)[]

Armenia was occupied on 23 August 2022, during the 2022 Middle Eastern War, and was then collectively administered by Azerbaijan, Georgia and West Persia until 5 October 2022 following a successful civilian uprising led by Colonel Onik Gasparyan, who then proclaimed himself as 'King of Armenia'.

Demographics[]

Ethnic groups[]

In 2012 around 92.6% of the population was Armenian and 5.1% was Azeri and 2.3% were other ethnic groups.

In 2020 Armenians formed 94.3% of the population, Azeri 3.8% and others 1.9%. The main reason for reason for the Azeri drop in percentage and numbers is the fact that a lot of them migrate to Azerbaijian or elsewhere due to the Armenian-Azeri conflict.
