In 1210 Hassan III of Alamut came to power in a secret sect of Nizari Islamic. During the Third crusade many Nizaris, or Assassins as they became known, conducted many executions, and helped save the Holy Land from destruction by inspired fear into the leaders of the crusades, thus preventing them from launching another out of fear of their own execution. However after the crusade there was no apparent need for the sect and their numbers began to dwindle. Hassan III, a revolutionary and forward thinking man revitilised and expanded the organistion, paving the way for later rulers to transform it into the omipresent secular organistation it is today.
