The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization comprising ten South East Asian states which promotes intergovernmental cooperation and facilitates economic integration amongst its members. Formed on August 8, 1967, its original founding members are Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines. Its principal aims include accelerating economic growth, social progress, and sociocultural evolution among its members, alongside the protection of regional stability and the provision of a mechanism for member countries to resolve differences peacefully.

History[]

Formation[]

ASEAN was formed on August 8, 1967 when foreign ministers of the eight founding nations met in Bangkok, Thailand. Reasons for its formation include the common fear of the expansion of communism during the Cold War and economic development within its neighboring states.

21st Century[]

ASEAN is currently embroiled with the South China Sea dispute, in which Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, and the Philippines are disputing islets, reefs, cays, and shoals in the region, alongside with the People's Republic of China.
