Assyria (Syriac: ܐܬܘܪ Āṯōr), officially the Sublime Kingdom of Assyria (Syriac: ܡܠܟܘܬܐ ܥܠܝܐ ܕܐܫܘܪ, Malkutha Elyaya d'Ashur) is a country located in the Middle East whose form of government is the presidential republic. It is bordered to the north and east by Kurdistan, to the south by Iraq, and to the west by Syria. Historically, Assyria is considered the worthy successor of the ancient Mesopotamian civilization.
As part of the Fertile Crescent, Assyria has been home to many ancient empires, namely the ancient Mesopotamian empires, the various Islamic caliphates, the British Mandate, and then the modern nation.
During the First World War, the Assyrian people suffered a genocide orchestrated by the Ottoman Empire that would lead them to fight against the Ottomans alongside the forces of the Entente supported by Russia, Egypt, Persia and the United Kingdom, later establishing their British mandate where they would settle. They would form part of the mandate and later Kingdom of Iraq as part of the territory, although they retained their Christian majority. During the Second World War they would participate in most of the combats in Iraq during the involvement of the nationalist regime during the conflict, finally obtaining their total autonomy, although not their independence. During the Cold War multiple attempts at independence failed until after the disastrous Iraqi defeat in the Iran-Iraq War in 1983, the civil war broke out that ended with the total collapse of the Iraqi forces and the dissolution of Iraq between Mesopotamia and Assyria, assimilating the Arabs within its territory or establishing their migration to Muslim countries such as Iran, Jordan or Saudi Arabia.
The nation is well known for its extreme economic and social development, however, Assyria is an extremely conservative society like Armenia or Georgia, with the Assyrian Orthodox Church an institution with a lot of power within the nation.
