The Republic of Asturias was a small state located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Bordered on the north by the Cantabrian Sea, Galicia to the west, south and east by the United Republic of Castile and Leon. It became independent after the withdrawal of the Spanish Army in 1985 but spent much of his life well divided by internal conflict or occupied by foreign forces.

Eventually reaching the point of total instability, its government agreed to integrate Asturias into the Comunero Republic.

History

In November 1985, the Juntas of Oviedo and Gijón proclaimed the Republic, but because of the chaos could not gain control of the country. In the east, mass of refugees from Cantabria and the Basque Country had taken control forcing a shift of the population resettled in harsh conditions in the centre. To the west around the galician city of Ribadeo was forming a community Galician-Asturian independent, in the center left-wing groups took control of the industrial centers of Aviles, Grado and Sama de Langreo constituted in communes and the steep southern valleys of the Picos de Europa mountain range just beyond the control of Oviedo. In the summer of 1988 the Republic Asturiana was reduced only to Oviedo, Gijón and a narrow corridor, and it was inevitable his fall, whether at the hands of the comunists of Aviles, or at the hands of the "invaders" from the east. It could only be saved by outside intervention, at that time could only be conducted by the Junta of Leon or the nascent Galician Confederation. And of these two governments only Galician was favorable to the defense of the independence of Asturias. So in January 1989 sent a diplomatic mission to the Galician Congress in Lugo for help, in the name of the traditional kinship and solidarity between the two nationalities. The Galician responded by sending forces against the Communists of Aviles and helping to restore control over the central part of Asturias. But it was not disinterested aid. In exchange for military assistance Asturias had to cede the territory west of the Navia River which was annexed to Galicia as part of the Comunity of Ribadeo.

Economy

Agriculture and animal husbandry were its main economic activities, combined with the coal mining and steel industry in Aviles and shipbuilding in Gijón.
