Australia, officially the Federation of Australia, is a country comprising the central and eastern mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Australia shares its only land border with Westralia to the west. Neighboring countries include Indonesia, the Portuguese overseas province of Portuguese Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north; Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia to the north-east; and Aotearoa to the south-east.

Australia is a megadiverse country, and its size gives it a wide variety of landscapes and climates, with deserts in the centre, tropical rainforests in the north-east, and mountain ranges in the south-east. It is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, with a population of about 22.8 million. There are sizable populations of people of European, Austronesian, East Asian, and Indigenous Australian origin among the diverse population. With strong industries like mining, agriculture, services, manufacturing, and tourism, Australia boasts a well developed mixed-market economy. The nation possesses an abundance of natural resources, including minerals like uranium, gold, iron ore, and coal. In addition, the country also exports wheat, cattle, and wool in large quantities to the global market.
