Australia, officially known as the Federation of Australia[1], is a sovereign state comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands.

Australia gained de facto independence in 1931, as part of the Statute of Ottawa. The Australia Act 1986 meant that the British Government could not interfere in Australian affairs. However, Australia remained a monarchy under the crown of the United Kingdom. Under the premiership of Julia Gillard, a Second Republic Referendum was conducted in October 2011, with the “Yes” vote winning by a majority of 54.7%. After a year, Australia became a Republic on the 7th of December, 2012.

History[]

Hughes gained his second chance of power after victory in the snap 1924 Australian federal election. Hughes capitalised on the anti-communist fears surrounding the Melbourne events of 1923 and the bitterness surrounding the lack of Australian representation in the Copenhagen Peace Conference.

Flag[]

After a Flag Referendum was held in August 2012, the current flag was chosen by a majority of 56.7%. The flag was created in 2000 by the Ausflag organisation, which was established in 1981[2] by Harold Scruby to promote a new flag of Australia.
