This is the list of presidents of the Republic of Australia. Australia was colonised by Britain in the 18th century and was a place to send British prisoners as a punishment. Although the British didn't want to kill the natives, in 2015 there are none left. By 1901 the Australians gained 'semi-independence' under the monarch King Edward VII. In 1914 World War I started and Australia fought on the 'old empires' side, which lost. However, Australia did fight off attacks from Japan and Russia. In 1918 the Treaty of Marseille was signed and Australia was given full independence.
