Austria-Hungary (German: Österreich-Ungarn or Donaumonarchie; Hungarian: Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia or Ausztria-Magyarország; Czech: Rakousko-Uhersko; Croatian: Austro-Ugarska), also known by other names and often referred to as the Austro-Hungarian Empire in English-language sources, was a political union of the former Austrian Empire (the kingdoms and lands represented in the Imperial Council, or Cisleithania) and the Kingdom of Hungary (Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen or Transleithania) that was formed in 1867. After the First World War, the empire transformed into a federation and is a major world power. The current monarch-since 4 July 2011-is Charles II and V, who succed his father Otto the Great.
