Austria, officially known as the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked central European nation. Austrian history is rich and vast and encompasses much of the history of Germany from the early days of the Holy Roman Empire to World War I and II.
Austria's terrain is very rugged and mountainous, being located along the Alps mountain range. Austria is bordered by Germany to the north, Hungary and Czechoslovakia to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west.
