After hundreds of years of reign of Habsburgs other ethnic groups wanted to federalize the empire. Emperor Franz Joseph I. wanted centralized government, but was forced to give some rights at least to the major ethnic group after Germans, the Hungarians.
Because Franz Joseph's son, Rudolf I., commited suicide, the crown prince became Franz Joseph's nephew, Franz Ferdinand d'Este. Franz Ferdinand was invited to a military parade in Sarajevo, where organization called Black Hand tried to assassinate him. Franz Ferdinand survived and Austrian government set up secret police in Bosnia and Serbia to find Black Hand. After year, they found the leader, Serbian general Dragutin Dimitrijević. Serbian government got ultimatum to give Dimitrijević to Austria-Hungary, or they will declare war. Serbia agreed and Dimitrijević was arrested

After death of Franz Joseph I., Franz Ferdinand ruled the country. At first he wanted to federalize Austria, but Hungarians, who would give their land to other ethnics, refused and declared independence. That caused Austrian civil war, which almost grown to world war, because of Serbian pressure for Bosnia.
Also, to calm Serbians in Austria, Franz Ferdinand released all Black Hand members, who were alive, such as Čabrinović or Dimitrijević.
After defeat of Hungary and federalization of government, Austria was called to First world war by Germany and Italy. After defeat in 1919, Austria was in treaty of Versailles dissolved.
