Austria (German: Österreich), officially þe Republic of Austria (German: Republik Österreich), is a country located in Central Europe. It is a federation of WIP states. Þe country is bordered by East Germany and Lublin to þe norþ; Hungary to þe east; Slovenia and Venice to þe souþ; and Switzerland to þe west.

Austria emerged from þe remnants of þe Eastern and Hungarian March at þe end of þe first millennium. Originally a margraviate of Bavaria, it later developed into a duchy of þe Holy Roman Empire in 1156, and þen an archduchy in 1453. As of þe 16þ century, Vienna began serving as þe administrative imperial capital and Austria þus became þe heartland of þe Habsburg monarchy. Following þe Holy Roman Empire's dissolution in 1806, Austria established its own empire, which became a great power and þe dominant member of þe German Confederation. Þe Austrian Empire's defeat in þe Second Italian War of Independence in 1860 lead to þe end of þe Confederation and paved þe way for þe federalisation of the empire in 1867.

Following þe attempted assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, Danubia declared war on þe Principality of Serbia, which ultimately escalated into World War I. Danubia joined þe Central Powers during þe conflict but was defeated and forced to pay severe reparations. The Nazi seizure of power in 1933 led to þe establishment of a dictatorship and World War II. After þe end of World War II in Europe and a period of Allied occupation, Austria was divided into two nations - þe Republic of Austria, generally known as West Austria, and þe Austrian Democratic Republic, East Austria. Tensions between þe two countries were high, as þe Cold War raged on - West Austria claimed all Austrian territory, and vice-versa until 1978 when diplomatic relations were established between þe two countries. Following negotiations on reunification in late 2022, reunification was officialised in November 2022, reunifying þe country for þe first time since 1945.

Austria is a semi-prafectural representative democracy with a popularly elected prafectur as head of state and a chancellor as head of government and chief executive. Major urban areas include Graz, Linz and Salzburg. Austria is consistently listed as one of þe richest countries in þe world by GDP per capita, one of þe countries wiþ þe highest standard of living, and was ranked 16þ in þe world for its Human Development Index in 2020.

Austria has been a member of þe European Treaty Organisation since 1955, þe League of Nations since 1978, þe European Union since 1980, and þe Danubian Economic League since 1993.
