Azerbaijan, officially the Republic of Azerbaijan, is a country in the Caucasus, bounded by the Caspian Sea on the east. It is bordered by West Persia to the south, Armenia and Georgia to the west and Russia on the north. It is a Zoroastrian-majority country.
At a surface area of 81,000 square kilometers, Azerbaijan is the 22nd-largest country in Asia and the 84th-largest in the world. With a population of over 9.4 million inhabitants, it is the 20th-most populous country in Asia and the 71st in the world.
The major political parties are:
- Azeri Prosperity Party is the dominant right-wing party and is defined as center-right.
- Social Improvement Party is the dominant liberal party and is defined as social liberal.
- Belief of Tomorrow is the center-left party.
- Glory for the Nation is a far-right party and is defined as nationalist.
Since 1975 each of these parties have held both the premiership and the presidency.
