Baden was a small margravate in SW Germany, its main part centered around Rastatt, with some exclaves in the south around Lörrach. These exclaves were lost however to Switzerland during the Swabian War and the Twenty-Year War.
In 1681, France annexed the Margravate, against all the rules, laws and traditions. Even France's allies in Germany weren't willing to take these excesses any more, and this was one of the reasons that led to the anti-French War. After its end in 1694, Baden was restored.
After the first French Republican War however, Baden fell to France in 1772 and stayed a part of it until the German Uprising.
