The Kingdom of Baden (Commonly known as Baden), (German: Königreich Baden) is a nation situated in Middle Europe between France, Switzerland, Rhineland and Germany. The country was created following the Second World War from the French occupation zone of Germany and in 1950 Berthold, Margrave of Baden was offered the throne which he accepted becoming the first King of Baden.
History[]
Pre-War History[]
Establishment of the Kingdom[]
In 1948 the British and Americans unified their German Occupation zones to form the Confederation of Rhine which quickly came under French influence. After some negations the French agreed to organize their occupation zone into the state of Baden. During the drafting of the Badener constitution a motion was brought up by the Royal House of Windsor that the House of Baden should be given their land back, the head of the House was the brother-in-law of Prince Philip, Husband to the future Queen Elisabeth II. The motion passed and the Treaty of Mountbatten officially led to the creation of the Kingdom of Baden.
Having their own King both fostered anti-German sentiment and discouraged Communism rising in the state, the people of Baden would also now have close ties to the United Kingdom which was the strongest foreign power in the world following the renaissance of American isolationism.
During the first couple of decades of the state the National Patriot Party held the Bundestag, this would lead to Carl Von Württemberg becoming Chancellor in 1971. The Social Democrats led a campaign based on the idea that if Baden would go down this path they would either return to feudalism or go under a future German Empire. In 1974 the Social Democrats would form a majority in the Bundestag.
1980s[]
During the 1980s Badener politics became more moderates, the National Patriot Party lost out to the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democrat would be replaced by the Liberal Party. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union the German Confederation would offer the Rhineland and Baden the option of unification but after 40 years of separation and identity building both nations declined.
In 1984 Baden would host the European Football Championship and the tournament saw their brother nation Rhineland win under coach Otto Rehhagel. In 1983 the brothers of Hoffmann and Hoffmann would win the European Song Contest under the banner of Baden with their song "Rücksicht".
End of the Millennium[]
By the end of the 1990s Baden's rank in Europe's economy began to wain as the nations newly free of Communism built up their economies under the free market of capitalism. Baden would still remain a strong nation within Europe with a solid national identity outside of Germany. In 2000 Austria, Germany, Baden and Rhineland would sign the Aachen Accords which increased cooperation between those nations.
