While Latvia and Estonia have had a long history, that history has often been complex, with subordination to other nations in the area such as Poland-Lithuania, Sweden and Russia. Following the end of the First World War, both Latvia and Estonia declared their independence from the newly-formed Soviet Union. However, they were ultimately absorbed by that nation. Following the end of the Second World War, when both nations had been, in turn, occupied by both Germany and the USSR, they again declared their independence. This time, they opted to join their two nations into one, celebrating their joint history, while shoring up their mutual defences. At the time, as the USSR was not in a position to object, their independence has stood.
