Last Feb 17 2016, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) attacked a military outpost in Maguindanao, Philippines killing 3 AFP soldiers and injuring 11. During the Marawi siege (May 23-Oct 23 2017) there have been reports of BIFF involvement. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) soon declared war last Sep 14 2018. This led to the Battle of Mindanao.
Battle of Mindanao[]
The AFP bombed a BIFF outpost in Davao which soon created more animosity between the two factions. The BIFF soon counterattacked in Zamboanga del Norte and routed the 32nd Infantry unit towards a trap in Zamboanga del Sur. This outraged the government which led to a massive bombing campaign in known BIFF outposts. The Campaign destroyed hectares of land in Davao and Dipolog. The AFP also put coastal defenses in Zamboanga peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi Tawi, and Maguindanao. Malaysia complained about damage in Sabah and threatened war. The AFP soon stopped its bombing campaign. That was the end of the First half of the war.
ISIS involvement[]
The terrorist group ISIS bombed a train in the LRT 1 Blumentritt station last 2018. The incident killed 36 civilians and 12 police officers. The AFP asked helped from the United States which accepted after the ISIS attack in New York, last 2017. The US sent 1,000 soldiers to Mindanao and also sent weapons. The AFP also bought an aircraft carrier from South Korea which was delivered in 2019, known as the PN-1161 or PN Lapu-Lapu after the Mactan warrior. The war lasted for 6 months which ended in BIFF occupation of most of Mindanao except for Region 10, Northern Mindanao. The BIFF and ISIS terrorists formed the Islamic State of the Philippines. The Government of the Philippines decided to fight a defensive campaign until the arrival of weapons and ships for the army.
Invasion[]
The promised weapons and ships arrived in Nov 2019. After that, the AFP tried it out against the Islamic Philippines in Davao which led to 198 casualties in the terrorist sides. The US soon sent one of its fleet just in time of the ISIS withdrawal from the war. The Malaysians put defenses in its border with the Philippines to prevent the ISIS to run to there. The combined might of the AFP, US, and Malaysian Government defeated the ISIS terrorists. Without the ISIS help, the BIFF was easily defeated in defending Islamic Philippines.
Nov 2020[]
The AFP soon invaded the last stronghold of the Moro insurgents in the ruins of Dipolog City. The war ended with the destruction of the BIFF.
Aftermath[]
The island of Mindanao was left in ruins after the fierce battles. Because of the new weaponry, the Philippines emerged as the 11th strongest defense in the world. The AFP used the weaponry to destroy the NPA, Abu Sayyaf, Maute Group, MILF, MNLF and other insurgents. The problem in Mindanao was ended.
