Bashkortostan (Bashkir: Башҡортостан; Russian: Башкортостан) is a republic of the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics located west of the Ural Mountains. Bashkortostan is dominated by the Turkic-speaking Bashkir people, with the republic having a Sunni Muslim majority. The capital city of Bashkortostan is Ufa.
